Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (Vineland-3)

The Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, Third Edition (Vineland-3) is a standardised measure of adaptive behaviour. Adaptive behaviour refers to the skills people use to manage daily life, communicate and relate to others in everyday settings. Vineland-3 describes typical day-to-day functioning rather than testing intelligence or academic achievement.

The comprehensive Interview and Parent/Caregiver Forms cover people from birth to 90+ years. Teacher Forms cover ages 3 to 21 years. A child psychologist selects the form or forms that suit the person’s age, setting and referral question. Vineland-3 may contribute to a broader developmental assessment or an autism assessment when information about everyday functioning is relevant.

What does Vineland-3 measure?

The core domains describe adaptive skills used across home, education and community settings:

  • Communication: understanding language, expressing needs and ideas, and written communication where developmentally relevant.
  • Daily Living Skills: personal care, household tasks and practical participation in school or community life.
  • Socialisation: relationships, play and leisure, and coping in social situations.

Depending on the person’s age and the form selected, Motor Skills may also be explored. Comprehensive forms can include a Maladaptive Behaviour domain when the psychologist needs additional information about behaviours that may affect everyday functioning. Not every domain or form is required for every person.

Who provides the information?

Vineland-3 offers different ways to gather information:

  • Interview Form: a child psychologist conducts a semi-structured interview with a parent or caregiver who knows the person’s everyday functioning well.
  • Parent/Caregiver Form: a parent or caregiver completes a questionnaire about behaviour in home and community life.
  • Teacher Form: an educator reports on adaptive behaviour observed in preschool, school or another structured education setting.

The child psychologist may use one form or combine information from different respondents. Reports do not need to match exactly. Differences can reflect the demands, routines and support available in each setting and require clinical interpretation.

What can Vineland-3 results show?

Scores compare reported everyday skills with those expected for an appropriate age group. The pattern can help describe strengths, areas requiring support and differences between settings. It may inform broader clinical understanding, support planning or questions for further assessment.

Vineland-3 does not diagnose autism, intellectual disability or another condition by itself. Results should be considered with developmental and health history, observation and other assessment information relevant to the referral question. A Vineland-3 result also does not guarantee a diagnosis, NDIS access, funding, school adjustments or eligibility for a particular service.

What can parents expect?

Parents or carers are asked about what the person usually does in daily life, rather than what they might be capable of in ideal conditions. It is helpful to answer from recent examples and ask for clarification when an item does not fit the person’s circumstances. The time and information required depend on the form selected and the assessment question.

If you have questions about your child’s communication, independence or everyday participation, book an initial consultation to discuss whether an adaptive behaviour or broader developmental assessment may be appropriate.
