Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS)

The Child and Adolescent Trauma Screen (CATS) is a brief, evidence-based screening tool used to assess exposure to potentially traumatic events and the presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children and adolescents.

It is based on the diagnostic criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and is commonly used to identify whether a child may be experiencing clinically significant trauma symptoms.

The CATS evaluates a child’s experiences and symptoms across three key areas:

  • Exposure to potentially traumatic events
  • Post-traumatic stress symptoms (e.g., nightmares, avoidance, distress)
  • Psychosocial functioning and daily impact

The CATS is completed in a 50-minute in-clinic session with a psychologist.

  • Children aged 7 to 17 years complete a self-report questionnaire
  • A parent or carer completes a corresponding form during the session

This combined approach allows for a well-rounded understanding of the child’s experiences and symptoms.
