Emotional Clusters in Families

Family life can feel like a repeating loop — the same arguments, the same “blow-ups”, and the same sense of walking on eggshells. In this practical webinar, Dr Kimberley introduces three common emotional “clusters” that can quietly drive conflict at home: misaligned parenting styles, scapegoating/blame cycles, and sibling rivalry. You’ll learn how to spot these patterns early, reduce escalation, and respond in ways that strengthen connection and teamwork across the whole family.

Most families don’t struggle because they’re “doing it wrong” — they struggle because predictable emotional patterns take hold under stress. These patterns can show up as a parent feeling like the “strict one” while the other feels like the “soft one”, a child being labelled as the “problem”, or siblings competing intensely for attention and fairness.

In this webinar, Dr Kimberley will unpack three classic emotional clusters that commonly impact family harmony:

  • Misaligned parenting styles: how differences in limits, tone, and follow-through can unintentionally amplify behaviour.
  • Scapegoating/blaming cycles: how families can get stuck in criticism, defensiveness, overcompensating, or “taking sides”.
  • Sibling rivalry: why competition can intensify at certain ages and how to reduce comparison, resentment, and daily conflict.

You’ll learn how to detect these clusters early, what keeps them going, and what to do instead — using a clear, practical framework that supports both boundaries and connection. The session includes realistic examples, language you can use at home, and a Q&A to help you apply the ideas to your own family.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this webinar, parents will be able to:

  • Recognise the three common family “emotional clusters” and how they typically show up at home.
  • Identify early warning signs that a family dynamic is slipping into blame, misalignment, or rivalry.
  • Use simple, practical strategies to increase parenting teamwork (without needing to parent identically).
  • Reduce scapegoating and “taking sides” by shifting to repair, responsibility, and problem-solving.
  • Apply concrete approaches to sibling conflict that reduce comparison and increase fairness and connection.

Workshop engagement activity

Parents will complete a quick “Family Pattern Snapshot”: identify which of the three clusters shows up most, what typically triggers it, and one small change each caregiver can trial this week to interrupt the cycle.
