Quirky Kid developed The Likes of Youth Kit as a structured conversation resource for adolescent boys, extending the organisation’s therapeutic publishing into the social and emotional challenges of early adolescence.

The kit was designed for use with boys aged approximately 10 to 16 and combines illustrated picture cards, question cards and a practitioner guide. Its purpose is to make difficult topics easier to discuss by giving young people a visual and conversational starting point.

The current Quirky Kid product record describes the kit as a tool for building self-awareness and coping strategies through collaborative activities and discussion.

Creating a resource specifically for adolescence

Much of Quirky Kid’s early publishing work focused on younger children. The Likes of Youth broadened that range by addressing themes more closely associated with early adolescence, including identity, independence, motivation, relationships, conflict and social pressure.

The design deliberately uses a more mature visual language than Quirky Kid’s younger-child resources, reflecting the need for materials that adolescents can engage with without feeling talked down to.

Professional distribution beyond the clinic

The resource moved beyond Quirky Kid’s own clinical use into professional distribution. An Australian Council for Educational Research clinical resources catalogue lists The Likes of Youth as a Quirky Kid resource and describes its use as a platform for discussion around common adolescent issues.

The ACER listing records the kit as comprising 12 illustrated adolescent images, a manual and conversation cards, providing an independent record of the resource within a professional psychology and education catalogue.

Part of Quirky Kid’s early therapeutic publishing range

The Likes of Youth became part of a broader collection of psychology-informed cards and resources developed by Quirky Kid for use in clinics, schools and family settings.

Alongside resources such as Face It, Tell Me a Story and Just Like When, the kit shows how Quirky Kid was building a publishing model around practical tools that could help adults and young people begin conversations that might otherwise be difficult to start.

The milestone remains relevant because it reflects an early effort to design mental health resources specifically for adolescents rather than adapting materials created for younger children.
