Quirky Kid welcomes professionals and interns from various walks of life including provisional psychologists, editors, graphic artists and teachers. During the course of their internships – from 3 to 6 months –  a lot of learning takes places. In this new section, we ask our interns and colleagues to share their experiences with Quirky Kid; what they’ve learnt and how this experience will help them in the future. In this post, Aiesha Oringo shares her experience.

Why did I apply?

I applied to intern at Quirky Kid Psychology Clinic to gain insight into how a child psychology clinic operates day to day. As a teacher passionate about supporting children, especially those most vulnerable. I was drawn to Quirky Kid’s values and creative, evidence-based approach. The friendly atmosphere and the clinic’s unique role as a publishing house also appealed to my interest in educational resources. I hoped the experience would broaden my understanding of psychology and help guide my choice of postgraduate study.

What did I learn?

During my internship, I learned about the inner workings of a psychology clinic and the daily life of psychologists. I worked alongside the team to create psychoeducational resources, including contributing to the development of the Quirky Kid Passport, which taught me how to design engaging tools that support children’s emotional and psychological growth. I also assisted in child psychology workshops focused on social skills and friendships, which gave me a deeper appreciation of how therapeutic principles are applied in creative, child-friendly ways.

How will this help me in the future?

The most valuable part of my experience was speaking with the psychologists and hearing about their career paths. Their generosity with advice and encouragement helped me clarify my own goals and reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing postgraduate psychology. I’m especially grateful to Bridget, Amber, Suzanne for taking time out of their busy schedules to have a chat with me, providing me with references and answers to questions relating to the field and Olivia for showing me the ropes and being so patient with me! I would also like to sincerely thank Dr. Kim and Leo Rocker for this internship opportunity.

My experience with QK as a company

Quirky Kid is a vibrant, supportive, and innovative organisation. The team’s creativity and commitment to high-quality care create an inspiring environment that balances professionalism with warmth. Being part of such a dedicated group reinforced my belief in the power of psychology to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives.

Tips for future applicants

Come in with an open mind and a willingness to help wherever you can. Be curious, flexible, and ready to learn, you’ll gain invaluable insight into the psychology profession. I would recommend this experience to any aspiring psychologist.
