Quirky Kid’s Basecamp® received a Highly Commended recognition at the 2018 Educational Publishing Awards Australia, adding another national acknowledgement for the program’s approach to child-centred anxiety education.
The 25th Educational Publishing Awards were held in Melbourne on 20 September 2018. Organised by the Australian Publishers Association, the awards recognise excellence and innovation in educational publishing across primary, secondary and tertiary education.
Basecamp® was recognised in the Primary Student Resource category covering Arts, Science, Humanities, Social Sciences, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages.
Earlier that year, Books+Publishing confirmed Basecamp® on the EPAA shortlist alongside STEM Projects Box from RIC Publications and Oxford Atlas+ from Oxford University Press.
Books+Publishing’s winners report records Oxford Atlas+ as the category winner, while Quirky Kid’s contemporaneous award record notes Basecamp® received a Highly Commended recognition.
Recognition for an Australian-developed anxiety program
Basecamp® was developed by Quirky Kid to help children aged 7 to 12 understand anxiety through a structured, engaging program grounded in cognitive behavioural principles.
Set in a fictional Australian national park, the program uses stories, illustrations, activities and practical exercises to help children recognise anxious responses, understand avoidance and practise strategies for approaching difficult situations.
A year of significant recognition
The Educational Publishing Awards recognition followed two major achievements for Basecamp® earlier in 2018.
In April, the program won the Educational Initiatives Award at the London Book Fair International Excellence Awards.
In May, Basecamp® won Best Designed Educational Primary/Secondary Book at the Australian Book Design Awards.
Together, the awards recognised different strengths of the program, including its educational purpose, publishing innovation and child-focused design.
Continuing the work
The 2018 recognition remains part of Quirky Kid’s broader history of developing psychology resources that combine clinical thinking with engaging educational design.
Basecamp® continues to form part of Quirky Kid’s suite of programs for children, families, schools and psychology clinics, supported by facilitator training and implementation guidance.
