Quirky Kid presented its approach to developing and publishing social and emotional learning resources at the 2016 London Book Fair, bringing Australian child psychology and educational publishing to an international professional audience.
The 2016 London Book Fair ran at Olympia London from 12 to 14 April. Dr Kimberley O’Brien and Quirky Kid co-founder and publisher Leonardo Rocker presented on the development of social and emotional resources for classrooms and clinics as part of the fair’s professional seminar program.
The presentation drew on Quirky Kid’s experience translating child psychology into structured resources that could be used beyond the consulting room by schools, clinicians and families.
Taking Australian social and emotional learning to London
At the time, Quirky Kid was building a distinctive publishing model around psychology-informed programs including The Best of Friends® and Power Up!.
The seminar explored practical issues involved in developing resources that combined psychological concepts, educational use, illustration and child-centred design.
A significant London Book Fair for Quirky Kid
The presentation took place during a particularly important year for Quirky Kid’s publishing work. Two of its programs had also been shortlisted for the 2016 London Book Fair International Excellence Awards.

Building an international publishing profile
Presenting at London gave Quirky Kid an opportunity not only to showcase finished resources, but also to explain the thinking behind their development to publishers, educators and other industry professionals.
The event became part of a wider period of international publishing activity that included Bologna, Frankfurt, Shanghai and Taipei, followed by further London Book Fair recognition in 2018.
The 2016 presentation remains an important milestone in Quirky Kid’s development as both a child psychology organisation and an Australian educational publisher.
