A child psychologist consultation gives families a structured space to discuss emotional, behavioural, social, learning or family concerns. The psychologist will listen to your priorities, consider your child’s strengths and daily context, and help identify practical next steps.
Appointments are available at our Sydney and Wollongong clinics, with online consultations available where clinically appropriate.
What happens at the first child psychologist appointment?
The first appointment focuses on understanding the concern, your child’s strengths, relevant history and what you would like to change. Depending on your child’s age and the reason for seeking support, the appointment may involve parents or carers, the child, or both.
Can a parent book a consultation without their child?
Yes. A parent or carer consultation can be a useful first step when you want guidance, need help understanding a concern or are unsure which service to choose. The psychologist can then advise whether and how your child should be involved in future appointments.
Do I need a referral to book a child psychologist?
You do not need a referral when booking privately. If you want to find out whether you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate, speak with your GP before the appointment about the current referral requirements.
Explore how the concern affects your child at home, at school, with friends and in family life. The psychologist considers both challenges and strengths rather than focusing on a label alone.
Develop practical goals and discuss suitable support, which may include child therapy, parent consultation, school collaboration, a psychological assessment or referral to another professional.
Attend in person at our Sydney or Wollongong clinic, or ask whether an online consultation is suitable. The recommended format depends on your child’s age, needs and the purpose of the appointment.
A consultation is a practical starting point for understanding your concerns and deciding what support may be most useful for your child and family.
Depending on your child’s age, needs and the reason for seeking support, the first appointment may involve parents or carers, the child, or both.
Before or during the appointment, you can share your child’s strengths, current concerns, developmental and family context, and any relevant school or health information.
Your psychologist will listen to your priorities, explore how the concern affects daily life and clarify what you would like to change. The discussion is shaped around your family’s circumstances rather than a one-size-fits-all pathway.
Your psychologist will explain suitable options. These may include child or family sessions, parent guidance, collaboration with educators, a psychological assessment or referral to another professional. Book an initial consultation to begin.
