Quirky Kid extended its international education work into Brazil through a professional event with School of Schools, bringing Australian child psychology perspectives to parents, educators and mental health professionals.

Dr Kimberley O’Brien, Quirky Kid’s Principal Child Psychologist and co-founder, joined the event to explore some of the most common mental health challenges facing children and adolescents, including anxiety, academic pressure, social media, emotional regulation and family stress. The session reflected an important part of Quirky Kid’s broader work: translating child psychology into practical, accessible guidance that can be used not only in clinics, but also in schools, homes and professional communities.

Connecting with educators and families in Brazil

The event was hosted with School of Schools, an education organisation working with private schools in Brazil. The collaboration created an opportunity to exchange ideas across different educational and cultural settings while keeping the focus on practical strategies for children’s wellbeing.

Rather than presenting mental health as a purely clinical issue, the session explored the shared role of parents, educators and professionals in helping children build emotional understanding, resilience and confidence.

Practical themes for child and adolescent wellbeing

Dr O’Brien discussed real-world issues that families and schools are increasingly navigating, including:

  • anxiety and emotional overwhelm
  • academic and performance pressure
  • social media and digital influences
  • emotional regulation
  • the role of adults in creating predictable, supportive environments

The emphasis was on evidence-informed approaches that can be translated into everyday interactions with children and adolescents.

Growing Quirky Kid’s international professional network

International collaborations such as this allow Quirky Kid to share Australian-developed approaches while also learning from educators, clinicians and families working in different systems.

They also build on Quirky Kid’s longstanding involvement in international publishing, education and professional development, extending the reach of our work beyond Australia.
