Hi. Im doing a year 12 assignment on twins. My topic involves exploring the factors contributing to loss of identity in twins. What aspects in a twins life impacts on their feelings of an identity loss? Do they differ between male and female twins?
HI Melali,
In my experience working with young clients who are twins there are often issues with sibling rivalry as they battle to find their own sense of identity. This includes competitive behaviour such as fighting over friends, jealousy relating to clothing or possessions or making derogatory remarks about the others choices or attitudes. The factors contributing to a loss of identity are varied, but this does not occur in every case. A homogenous parenting style is the main factor impacting on the inability for some twins to develop individual identities. Common feelings relating to identity loss are frustration, anger, depression and confusion. I will ask one of my colleagues at QK to do further research in regard to gender differences to complete your series of questions. I hope you do well in your assignment, Melali.
